Planning a wedding will be one of the largest budgeted expenses you will have during your life and that is reason enough to work towards lowering it in reasonable places to reduce the overall expense. The average wedding reception costs between $6,000 and $10,000. This amount includes such things like the wedding reception venue, tables and chairs, food and beverages, decorations, music, and wedding favors. With such a large portion of money being contributed to the wedding reception, reducing costs in all areas without reducing quality or style can save a great deal of money.
Place card holders as well as wedding favors are both important items to have during a wedding reception. Place card holders will lead and guide your guests where to be seated and wedding favors show appreciation towards your wedding guests for attending the special day. A wedding that includes more than one hundred guests these items can get expensive if wedding favors and place card holders are purchased separately. My mom made mine and it was beautiful.
She bought some inexpensive boxes that were wrapped in burlap from Old Time Pottery. They were three different sizes. She removed the burlap, sprayed each box with adhesive, then wrapped each in batting, and finally covered each one in silk. No obviously you don't have to use silk, satin in ivory would be much cheaper. But you get the idea.
She stacked the boxes, and used a 3" wide black ribbon and made a big pretty bow on top. She also embellished the front of the "packages" with crystals with scrollwork.
I am sure mine costed more than $40 but it can be done for less than that.
You can use many other things to recover and use as a card box and save some money.
Just think outside the box for creative things you could use.
Large coffee can
A smaller rubbermaid tote
Basket with a lid
I believe Michaels sells cardboard mailboxes that are used for this and can be covered in fabric
Any sturdy cardboard box (maybe a paper ream box?)
Just about anything can be covered with fabric and made pretty. Look around at thrift shops or flea markets for things to make it out of.
This is what my box first looked like until Mom decided to completely change the design of it.
I would have to try and find a photo of what it looked like after she redid it in the silk and black ribbon.
Don't spend money on one of those things, make your own. It will be cheaper and probably look nicer! If you need any help feel free to email me!
ETA- I loved that one too but my mom is such a perfectionist and is never happy with anything that is why she remade it. I wish I could find another pic but I did look up her flickr photostream and she has the one she made for my sister in 2005. I will add both pics of that so you can see it. It was neat as well and with that one she used the cardboard mailbox.
